Abstract

This translation of an undisputed classic aims to be both accurate and readable. Tocqueville's subtlety of style and profundity of thought offer a challenge to readers as well as to translators. As both a Tocqueville scholar and an award-winning translator, Arthur Goldhammer is uniquely qualified for the task. In his Introduction, Jon Elster draws on his recent work to lay out the structure of Tocqueville' argument. Readers will appreciate The Ancien Régime and the French Revolution for its sense of irony as well as tragedy, for its deep insights into political psychology and for its impassioned defense of liberty.

Abstract

"This entirely new translation of Tocqueville's 'Souvenirs'--his posthumously published, extraordinarily lucid and trenchant analysis of the 1848 revolution in France--will be the definitive English edition of the work for decades to come. Tocqueville's most polished literary text, full of bravura passages and stylistic flourishes, it was never intended for publication. Written immediately after the climax of Tocqueville's political career and just before Louis Bonaparte's 1851 coup prompted the great theorist of democracy to retire from political life, it is an exercise in candid personal reflection. Yielding to pressure from friends, Tocqueville approved its publication, but only after all characters portrayed in it--mostly unflatteringly--had died. In 1893, more than three decades after Tocqueville's death, his nephew published an expurgated version. Only in 1964 did French editors restore the potentially offensive passages. A selection of speeches, occasional texts, notes, and letters add significantly to our understanding of the revolutionary period and Tocqueville's role in it. His letters range from personal concerns to all the important political issues of the day. They illuminate not only the French conflict but the powerful reaction taking hold in Germany and Italy. They also document Tocqueville's only serious intellectual encounter with socialism and its theoreticians (Cabet, Proudhon, and Fourier, but not Marx). Finally, the edition evinces the continuing influence the United States on Tocqueville, who tirelessly, albeit futilely, promoted the American model of government for the new French Republic"--Provided by publisher.

Abstract

Alexis de Tocqueville's Democracy in America has been recognized as an indispensable starting point for understanding American politics. From the publication of the second volume in 1840 until his death in 1859, Tocqueville continued to monitor political developments in America and committed many of his thoughts to paper in letters to his friends in America. He also made frequent references to America in many articles and speeches. Did Tocqueville change his views on America outlined in the two volumes of Democracy in America published in 1835 and 1840? If so, which of his views changed and why? The texts translated in Tocqueville on America after 1840: Letters and Other Writings answer these questions and offer English-speaking readers the possibility of familiarizing themselves with this unduly neglected part of Tocqueville's work. The book points out a clear shift in emphasis especially after 1852 and documents Tocqueville's growing disenchantment with America, triggered by such issues as political corruption, slavery, expansionism and the encroachment of the economic sphere upon the political.

Abstract

Young Alexis de Tocqueville arrived in the United States for the first time in May 1831, commissioned by the French government to study the American prison system. For the next nine months he and his companion, Gustave de Beaumont, traveled and observed not only prisons but also the political, economic, and social systems of the early republic. Along the way, they frequently reported back to friends and family members in France. This book presents the first translation of the complete letters Tocqueville wrote during that seminal journey, accompanied by excerpts from Beaumont's correspondence that provide details or different perspectives on the places, people, and American life and attitudes the travelers encountered. These delightful letters provide an intimate portrait of the complicated, talented Tocqueville, who opened himself without prejudice to the world of Jacksonian America. Moreover, they contain many of the impressions and ideas that served as preliminary sketches for Democracy in America, his classic account of the American democratic system that remains an important reference work to this day. Accessible, witty, and charming, the letters Tocqueville penned while in America are of major interest to general readers, scholars, and students alike.
